We are too much haunted by ourselves, projecting the central shadow of self on everything around us. And then comes the Gospel to rescue us from this selfishness. Redemption is this, to forget self in God. – - Frederick W. Robertson
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.(Romans 3: 23)
“I can’t believe this is happening to me – God is really out to get me.”
“I deserve everything I get – I really blew it”
“God is gonna get you for this!”
Do any of these phrases sound familiar to you? Maybe you have heard a friend say something like them. Or maybe you are feeling the guilt and shame over something you’ve done. And now it seems like all your past wrongdoings are piling on each other and creating new punishments in your life.
The Fifth Amendment of the US Constitution provides that no person can be tried for the same offense twice. This keeps the government from prosecuting individuals or imposing more than one punishment for the same crime. This is called Double Jeopardy. It is actually one of the oldest legal concepts in western civilation, dating back to 350 BC Rome.
Jesus Christ has taken on the punishment for our past sins, so that, just like Double Jeopardy, we won’t be punished for our wrongdoing. Rid yourself of the destructive thoughts of guilt, shame, and fear. The truth is, Jesus has already saved you from all your past sins. If you have accepted him into your life and have repented of your past – it is over, past and done for. No one can “get you” for what you have done – it has been washed away.
He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.(Ephesians 1: 7)
