And yet, it is possible to train an elephant from running away. By tying a metal chain attached to a stake in the ground around a baby elephant’s leg when they are very young, the world’s most powerful animal, which can uproot a tree as easily as you and I can break a toothpick, grows to remains tied down by a small peg and a flimsy chain. Why?
The answer is that when the baby elephant is constrained, the chain is enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the chain can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”
Like the elephants, how often do we remember the limitations that held us back in the past, and even though we are now stronger and smarter and could break free at any time, we let our old beliefs win out?
The truth is, God has given all of us the gift of freedom through his grace in Jesus Christ. We can break free from our fears and limiting beliefs now – today – and Live Large For God!
I don’t have a long theological resume to share, as I’ve spent my adult life as so many other “regular people” out there. I attended college, got married to my high school sweetheart, and settled down to succeed in the business world. I was blessed to have a marriage that “stuck” and eventually became the mom of a 14 year old baseball fanatic and an 8 year old determined to be the next female Bruce Lee. I now spend a good amount of my not-working time driving them around and waiting for them to finish. Which gives me time to read, think, and try to study and understand the Bible and how it really applies to me.
But, as I’m sure you can relate to, the years haven’t been all rosy and peaceful. As the wife of a small business owner, we have plenty of challenges of all kinds, and I was an “economic refugee” from corporate America for two years when the housing market crashed. We’ve agonized over a lot of the same concerns and struggles you probably have, and I’m sure the trials are far from over.
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29: 11
And yet, through the good, the bad, and even the boring, God has been with me, working in my life, even when I haven’t been able to feel his strength holding me up. And, despite my attempts to just live day to day and be satisfied, God has, more and more been prodding me to leverage the strength and knowledge I have learned from my past and follow my passion to study, write and share His love.
Nothing is so strong as gentleness, nothing so gentle as real strength. ~ Francis de Sales
But as I’ve felt God’s gentle (and, sometimes, not so gentle) nudging to follow His will, obstacles and hurdles have gotten in the way. While ultimately a tool of Satan to keep me from experiencing God’s best, I’ve allowed these roadblocks to deter me. Like the strong and powerful elephant, I have believed the lie that I can’t do it…because I never have.
In my distress I prayed to the Lord,
and the Lord answered me and set me free. Psalm 118: 5
But the wonderful news for me AND FOR YOU is that it is never to late to grasp God’s plans as our own and experience His best. Let’s stop giving credibility to the lie and LIVE LARGE FOR GOD instead! HE will provide the strength that we need today to break free of our barriers and take the first step toward our dreams. And HE will provide the strength that we need tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day to keep on moving toward His plans for us, even when we can’t see anything but obstacles in our way.
